A tab is a sale kept open under a name, such as "Table 2" or a member's name, so people can keep ordering and pay at the end. Every open tab is on the strip at the foot of the till, with what it owes, on every till.

## Before you start

- You need to be able to use the till. The Bar Staff, Bar Manager, Casual Staff and Head Coach roles can by default.
- For a member's tab, choose the member first, so the tab has member prices. See [Make a sale and take payment](https://sportsclubos.net/help/pos/sell/index.md).

## Open a tab

1. Add the first products to the sale.
2. Press **Tab**. The dialog **Put it on a tab** asks for **Name on the tab**. Type one, or press a suggestion (**Bar**, **Window table**, **Table 1**, **Table 2**, **Table 3**, **Balcony**). For a member or a function, their name is filled in.
3. Press **Open the tab**. A message says, for example, **On the tab: Table 2**, and the tab joins the strip at the foot of the till.

The dialog also says what happens to it at closing time: **A visitor's tab is paid before the session closes.**, or **A member's tab left open at closing goes on their account.**

## Add to a tab

1. Press the tab on the strip at the foot of the till. Its name, number and the time it was opened show above the lines.
2. Add products as usual. New lines are marked **Not on the tab yet**.
3. Press **Save tab** to save them and go back to a new sale, or **Pay** to save them and take payment.

*Lines added to a tab are saved to it when you press Save tab or Pay. Shown in release 2026.10.29 · Till · as an Administrator.*

**Repeat round** adds the last round again: the lines added together the last time, other than courts, guest fees, hire, top-ups and restringing.

Press a line already on the tab to see when it was added and by whom.

## More for a tab

Press the **···** button beside the tab's name:

- **Repeat the last round**
- **Rename the tab**
- **Move lines to another tab…** or **Split by lines…**: tick the lines, then **Move to a tab…**, and choose another open tab or **A new tab**.
- **Split into equal parts**: opens **Take payment** to split what is owed into 2 to 6 equal parts.
- **Merge another tab into this one…**: its lines come onto this tab, and the other tab closes.
- **Take lines off…**: see below.
- **Print the bill**: prints the tab as it stands, headed "Bill (not a tax invoice until paid)".

Lines cannot be moved or merged once something has been paid on the tab, and who the tab is for cannot change then either.

## Take lines off a tab

A line not yet saved to the tab can be removed with **Remove**. A line already on the tab is taken off with **Take off…**, with a reason (**Rung up by mistake**, **Spilt**, **Changed their mind**, **Not served**, or your own). Taking saved lines off needs a manager: someone who may give overrides does it themselves; anyone else is asked for a manager's PIN. See [Voids, refunds and manager approval](https://sportsclubos.net/help/pos/refunds-and-overrides/index.md).

## Pay a tab

1. Open the tab and press **Pay**.
2. Take payment as for any sale. Part of the tab can be paid now and the rest later: the tab stays open with what is **Owing**.

When it is paid in full, the tab leaves the strip. **Close the tab** goes back to a new sale and leaves the tab open.

## At closing time

- A visitor's or a guest's tab must be paid before the session on that till can close.
- A member's tab still open when the session closes goes onto their household account, even if that takes the account over its limit. See [Charge to a member's account](https://sportsclubos.net/help/pos/charge-to-account/index.md).
- A function's tab stays open, and the till warns about it.

See [Open and close a till session, and count the drawer](https://sportsclubos.net/help/pos/open-and-close/index.md).

## If something goes wrong

- **"Give the tab a name."** A tab for a visitor needs a name, so the next person can find it.
- **"Something has already been paid on this tab, so its lines cannot be moved."** Pay or refund first, or open a new tab for the rest.
- **"That tab was not kept on this tablet, so it opens when the connection is back."** The connection is down and this tablet does not have that tab. See [Selling while the connection is down](https://sportsclubos.net/help/pos/offline/index.md).
