FOUR KINDS

Ladders, box leagues, round robins and knockouts

Choose the sport and the kind, and see what you will get before you make it. The usual rules are filled in, and you change only what you need.

Ladder

A standing list that never ends.

  • Challenge someone up to three places above.
  • Win, and you take their place.
  • Who has moved in the last four weeks is marked.

Box league

Small groups of a similar standard.

  • Everyone in a box plays everyone else over a round of a few weeks.
  • The top go up a box and the bottom go down.
  • The boxes are made from the club rating.

Round robin

Everyone plays everyone, once or twice.

  • A round at a time, with a table of points.
  • The top of the table wins.
  • Singles or doubles.

Knockout

A seeded draw: win and you go through.

  • The top players are seeded and kept apart; byes go to the top seeds.
  • A plate gives first-round losers a second event.
  • Several grades and sports in one event, with one order of play.

SCORE FROM A CODE

Players score from a QR code, with no login

Each match has its own code, such as GPHC-7K3M, and a QR code. Whoever scans it can score that match on their phone, point by point.

  • Print the codes.Make codes for every match ready to play, then print them as cards: six to an A4 page, with the players, round, court, time and QR code.
  • One phone scores. The first phone to start scoring a match scores it to the end. Every phone that opens the match after that watches it live.
  • The result counts.Record the result and the draw, the table or the ladder moves on, with the club rating.
  • Hand it over. The scoring phone can let the match go, and another carries on from the same score.

QUESTIONS

Questions about the free competitions manager

Step-by-step instructions are in the Help centre: Competitions.

Is it free?

Yes, for any club or organiser. It carries the Sports Club OS name.

Who needs to sign in?

Only the organiser. Scorers open a match by its QR code or code, and a TV opens its screen link once. Neither needs a login.

Which sports?

Squash, tennis, padel, pickleball and badminton, singles or doubles (padel is doubles only).

Do we need the rest of Sports Club OS?

No. This is the competitions part of Sports Club OS, on its own. The rest runs members, courts, staff and functions, if you ever want it.

What does a scorer need?

A phone with a web browser. They scan the QR code on the card, or go to sportsclubos.net/score and type the code. Nothing to install, and no account.

Can someone take the scoring from the phone that is scoring?

No. The first phone to start scoring a match scores it. Anyone else who opens the code watches. The scoring phone can hand the match over when it needs to.

When does a code stop working?

When the match’s result is recorded, or 14 days after it was made if nobody started scoring. A lost card can be replaced with a new code.

Can we run several grades or sports in one event?

Yes. An event holds several competitions, a grade or a sport each, with one order of play for the courts they share.

Can we change the rules?

Yes. The usual rules are filled in when you make a competition, and you can change them until it starts: how many places a ladder challenge reaches, the size of a box, the seeds, a plate, and how each match is scored.

Do the TVs need a computer?

Only a web browser. Open the screen’s link once on the TV’s browser and leave it. It needs no sign-in.

Can the result of a match be corrected?

Yes. The organiser can correct or remove a result afterwards, and the draw, table or ladder follows.

What about a friendly match?

Score it with Sporty Score, the free match scorer, on your phone with no account.

WHY FREE?

Why these tools are free

We make our living from the full club system. The free tools are free because clubs that use them tell us how to make them better, and some later ask about the rest. They carry our name on the screen. That is the whole arrangement.
