How to

Score a badminton match on a phone

Score a badminton match rally by rally, with the service court, doubles positions, lets, faults, cards, the interval and the change of ends.

Who this is for: Anyone with “Play in competitions” or “Run competitions” (by default: Administrator, Sports Convener, Member).

Badminton is scored one press a rally. Sports Club OS keeps the score, works out who serves and from which court, calls the interval and the change of ends, and says when it is game point or match point. Starting the scorer, one phone scoring at a time, Undo and recording the result work as for every sport: see Score a match point by point on a phone.

The rules it scores by

A new badminton competition follows the BWF Laws as they stand on the day it is made:

  • Until 3 January 2027: best of 3 games to 21. At 20-all a game is won by two clear points, and at 29-all the next point wins (30-29). The 60-second interval comes when the leading score first reaches 11.
  • From 4 January 2027: best of 3 games to 15. At 14-all a game is won by two clear points, and at 20-all the next point wins (21-20). The interval comes at 8.

The change happens by itself on 4 January 2027. A competition keeps the rules it was made with, so one that started on 3x21 finishes on 3x21. Both are offered whenever a competition is made. Your club can also offer one game to 21, the best of 5 games to 11, one game to 25 (Badminton Victoria's junior format) and side-out scoring from before 2006, on Admin > Settings, Scoring. See Set the scoring rules for each sport.

Before the first rally

  1. Press Skip the warm-up, or Start the warm-up (2 minutes).
  2. Who won the toss? Press the winner.
  3. Press what they chose: Serve, Receive or Choose an end. If they chose an end, the scorer asks what the other side chose: Serve or Receive.
  4. In doubles, the scorer then asks Who serves first for the serving pair, and Who receives first for the other pair. Press a name each time.

The status line says Love all, play.

Score the rallies

  • Press the pad of the player or pair who won the rally. The winner of a rally serves the next one.
  • The status line gives the call, the server's score first: 5-3, 5 all. When the serve passes to the other side it says Service over, 3-5. The pad of the new server says Service over until the next rally.
  • When a side can win the game with the next rally, its pad says GAME POINT (or MATCH POINT) and the status line ends with it: 20-18, Game point. At 29-all (20-all in games to 15) both pads say it.

The service court

In singles, Court at the top of the server's pad shows R or L: the right court when the server's own score is even, the left when it is odd. It changes by itself. If the server served from the other court, press the other letter. The score stands, and the next rally follows the score again.

In doubles, the top of each pad shows the pair's two names, with the one in the court the score calls for marked: the server on the serving pair's pad, the receiver on the other. Under the score, each pad says Serving · right or Receiving · right (or left). The players change courts only when their side wins a rally while serving, so the scorer works out the next server and receiver for you. If the players are standing differently, press the other name. Use this at the start of each game too: the winning pair may choose either player to serve first, and the other pair either player to receive.

Lets, faults and cards

Press Decision under the pads:

  • Let: the rally does not count. The same player serves again from the same court.
  • Fault: and a name: the rally goes to the other side, marked F in the game's history.
  • Cards, then:
    • Yellow card (a warning): the score does not change.
    • Red card (a fault): the rally goes to the other side.
    • Black card (disqualified): the match goes to the other side. Press it twice.

A player who retires is under More: press Retired under their name, twice. The games and points already played stand.

The interval and between games

When the leading score first reaches 11 (8 in games to 15), the pads give way to the interval: the game and the score, a 60-second count and Continue. Press Continue when the players are back. In the deciding game the screen also says Change ends, and the status line keeps saying it until the next rally.

When a game ends, the screen shows who won it and the score, then the 120 seconds between games with Start game 2 (or 3). The winner of a game serves first in the next.

The court's TV

The TV shows both names, the games so far, the points now and the serve beside the serving side, with the court (Right or Left). Its banner gives the same call as the phone, and the interval's count.

When the match is over

The scorer shows the result and each game's score, with the points each side won, the longest run of points, the points won on serve, and any faults and cards. Press Record the result. The draw, table or ladder moves straight away.
