How to
Choose the club's scoring rules
The Scoring tab of Settings: which sports are offered, each sport's built-in rules, the older rules the club can offer, and the default for a new competition.
Who this is for: Anyone with “Run competitions” (by default: Administrator, Sports Convener).
The Scoring tab of says how matches in each sport are scored. Every rule starts as the sport's current rulebook says. Rules that have changed, or that some clubs play locally, can be offered as options. The tab is for whoever runs competitions: the Sports Convener by default, and the Administrator. Someone who may change only this sees only this tab of Settings.
Each change is saved as soon as you make it. There is no Save button on this tab.
The tab has a section for each sport scored point by point: squash, tennis, padel, pickleball and badminton, in that order. Each section has the sport's built-in rules, its Options and its Club default. Snooker has no section: it is scored a frame at a time, as the best of 3 or 5 frames.
How the rules reach a match
- The sport's rulebook gives every default.
- Your club switches on the options it wants to offer, and may make some of them its own default.
- A competition copies the rules when it is made: the club's default, with anything the convener chose from what the club offers. They can be changed until the competition starts.
- Every match in the competition is scored by those rules.
So a change on this tab affects only competitions made afterwards. A competition already made keeps the rules it was made with, so its earlier and later matches are scored alike.
Offer a sport, or switch it off
At the top of each sport's section, Offer squash (or the sport's name) is switched on to start with.
- Press its switch to switch the sport off. The message says, for example, Padel: switched off for new competitions, and the line under the switch says Switched off: not offered for a new competition. Competitions already made carry on.
- Press it again to offer the sport again.
A sport switched off is not listed under Sport on New competition. Use it for a sport your club does not play, so nobody makes a competition in it by mistake.
The built-in rules for squash
Squash follows the World Squash Singles Rules 2025, in force from 1 September 2025:
- Point-a-rally scoring, games to 11, the best of 5 games or, if the competition says so, the best of 3.
- At 10-all a game is won by two clear points.
- One serve: a fault loses the rally.
- A warm-up of up to 4 minutes, then up to 1 minute to the first serve.
- 2 minutes between games.
- A player who retires, or loses the match for conduct, keeps the points and games already won. No game that was not played is made up.
- No video review.
- A walkover gives the match, with no games or points.
The built-in rules for the other sports
Each section names its rulebook and lists its rules in words, as the scorer follows them:
- Tennis: the ITF Rules of Tennis 2026. Advantage games, tie-break sets, the best of 3 sets, two serves with service lets, 90 seconds at a change of ends and 2 minutes between sets.
- Padel: the FIP Rules of Padel 2026, with Star Point at deuce. Doubles only, the best of 3 sets with a tie-break at 6-all.
- Pickleball: the USA Pickleball Official Rulebook 2026. Side-out scoring, a game to 11 won by 2, no service lets.
- Badminton: the BWF Laws of Badminton. The best of 3 games to 21 (3x21) until 3 January 2027. From 4 January 2027 the BWF Laws 2027 (3x15) become the default by themselves, and the section says so.
In tennis, padel and badminton, a player or pair who retires keeps the score as played. In pickleball, as its rulebook says, the other side is given the points it needed and each game not played is recorded to nil; your club can offer Keep the score as played on retirement instead.
What each sport's scorer does is in its own article: Score a tennis or padel match on a phone, Score a pickleball match on a phone and Score a badminton match on a phone.
Offer an option
- Open and press Scoring.
- Go to the sport's section. Under Options, find the rule. Each says what it is, and under When and why it changed, where it comes from.
- Press its switch. A message says it is offered. Press it again to stop offering it.
An option switched on can be chosen when a competition is made, or made the club's default. An option switched off is offered to nobody.
The options for squash:
| Option | What a competition can then choose |
|---|---|
| Players choose at 10-all | At 10-all the players choose two clear points or next point wins. The scorer stops and asks |
| Next point wins at 10-all | Sudden death at 10-all, as in the World Squash doubles rules |
| Point-a-rally to 15 | Games to 15, two clear from 14-all, as some pennant grades play |
| Hand-in, hand-out to 9 | Only the server scores; at 8-all the receiver chooses to play to 9 or to 10 |
| 90 seconds between games, and from the warm-up to play | 90 seconds for either or both, as the rules were until 31 August 2025 |
| Video review, as World Squash 2025 | 2 reviews each a match in the best of 5 (1 in the best of 3), and 1 each in the deciding game. A review is lost if the decision stands and kept if it is overruled |
| Video review, one a game | 1 review each a game, kept if overruled, and 1 each at 10-all |
| Award the remaining points on retirement | When a player retires or loses the match for conduct, the other player is given every point still needed (for example 11-3, 11-0) |
| Two serves (Squash 57) | A first fault gives a second serve; two in a row lose the rally. The receiver may play a first fault, and a let does not cancel one |
| Forfeit scores in tables | A walkover counts in a box or league table as a win by every game needed, each to the game's target: 3 games and 33 points in the best of 5 to 11, 45 points in games to 15 |
The other sports' options are listed the same way, each with what it is and when and why it changed. Among them:
- Tennis: No-ad (deciding point), No service lets, A match tie-break to 10 in place of the final set, short formats (one set, short sets to 4, Tie Break Tens), Fast4 (Australia), Pro sets to 8, final-set tie-breaks and advantage final sets, Reviews, and Award the remaining points on retirement.
- Padel: Golden point, Advantage, One advantage, then a golden point, Final set without a tie-break, Padel Australia's shorter formats, and Award the remaining points on retirement.
- Pickleball: Rally scoring (provisional), The freeze, Service lets, Game to 7 (weather), games to 25, Win by 1 (team play), and Keep the score as played on retirement.
- Badminton: One game to 21 (1x21), Best of 5 games to 11 (5x11), One game to 25 (Badminton Victoria juniors), Side-out scoring (before 2006), a wheelchair rule, and Award the remaining points on retirement.
Set the club's default
Club default, in each sport's section, says what a new competition in that sport starts with.
- Press The rulebook's to start every new competition with the built-in rules, or A club rule to set your own.
- With A club rule, choose each setting: A match is, and each setting the club offers more than one choice for. For squash these are At 10-all, Between games, From the warm-up to play, When a player retires, A walkover in a box or league table, Video review and Serves; the other sports have their own, such as At deuce and When a player retires. A setting appears only once an option gives it a second choice. Each choice is saved as you make it, with the message Club default saved.
- The line A new competition starts with says the result: the rulebook's name, or "Club rule:" and what differs from it.
Switching an option off takes it out of the club's default too: that setting goes back to the rulebook's.
What happens next
The convener sees the choices on New competition (see Create a competition and take entries). Wherever a competition's rules are shown (its Rules tab, the scorer, the list of competitions) they name the rulebook, or say "Club rule:" and what it changes.
Each change on this tab is recorded in the audit log, with who made it.
If something goes wrong
- The club does not offer that. It can be switched on under Settings, Scoring. A competition was made, or changed, with a rule that is switched off. Switch the option on here, or choose another rule.
